Your first visit
Getting ready for your first visit to our Woodbridge hospital? Here is what to bring, when to arrive, what the exam covers, and how to book your pet's visit.
Before you come in
To book your first visit, call (703) 680-4646 or request an appointment online. Then fill out our new client form. It shortens check-in and gives your vet a head start on your pet’s history.
What to bring
- Records from your previous vet, shelter, or breeder, including vaccine dates. You can also ask them to send the records to us before your visit.
- A list of the medications and supplements your pet takes, or simply bring the bottles.
- The name of the food your pet eats and how much they get each day.
- A fresh stool sample, if we ask for one when you book.
- Your own list of questions or concerns, so nothing gets forgotten.
On the day
Please arrive a little early, about 10 to 15 minutes, so check-in does not feel rushed and your pet has a moment to settle. Bring dogs on a leash and cats in a secure carrier, even if your pet is calm at home. A waiting room with other animals can surprise any pet. Our hospital is in the Hillendale Center in Woodbridge, and you can find details on our directions and hours page.
What the exam covers
Your vet starts by asking about your pet’s history, diet, behavior, and anything you have noticed lately. Then comes a full physical exam, from nose to tail:
- Weight and body condition
- Eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, including teeth and gums
- Heart and lungs
- Skin and coat, with a check for fleas and ticks
- Belly, lymph nodes, joints, and muscles
Afterward, your vet will typically go over what they found, which vaccines are due, and whether any tests make sense. Before any test or treatment, they will explain what it is for, and you can ask as many questions as you like. You can read more about what a wellness exam includes.

Common questions
Do I need to fill out the new client form ahead of time?
It helps a lot. Sending it in before your visit means less paperwork at the desk and more time with your vet.
What if I cannot get my pet's old records?
Bring whatever you have, even a rabies tag or an old receipt. Give us your previous vet's name, and with your permission we can usually request the records.
Do I need to bring a stool sample?
Only if we ask for one when you book. If so, bring a fresh sample collected within about 12 hours, sealed in a clean bag or container.
Can I bring more than one pet?
Yes, just tell us when you book. Each pet needs its own exam, so we can set aside enough time for all of them.
How long does a first visit take?
Plan on a little more time than a routine visit, since there is more history to go over. Arriving early helps keep things on schedule.
Should I feed my pet before the visit?
For a regular exam, normal feeding is usually fine. If bloodwork or another test is planned, ask when you book whether your pet should skip a meal.
What pets do you see?
We see dogs and cats of all ages. We do not see birds, rabbits, or other exotic pets.
