Core and lifestyle vaccines

Vaccines generally fall into two groups. Core vaccines are recommended for nearly every dog or cat because the diseases they prevent are common, serious, or easy to spread. Rabies is a core vaccine for both. For dogs, distemper and parvovirus are also core. For cats, the core set usually covers feline distemper and common upper respiratory viruses.

Lifestyle vaccines depend on how your pet lives. A dog who goes to daycare, hikes in wooded areas, or swims in creeks may benefit from shots that a mostly indoor dog does not need. A cat who goes outside or lives with other cats may need protection an indoor-only cat can skip. At your pet’s wellness exam, the veterinarian will ask about these habits and recommend a plan.

Rabies and Virginia law

Virginia law requires rabies vaccination for dogs and cats. Rabies is almost always fatal and can spread to people, so this one is not optional. After the shot, you will get a certificate. Keep it somewhere safe, since you may need it for county licensing, travel, or a daycare or pet sitter that asks for proof.

What to expect at the visit

Before any vaccine, the veterinarian examines your pet to make sure it is well enough to get one. Shots are given with a small needle and take only a moment. Puppies and kittens get a series of vaccines spaced a few weeks apart, then boosters. Adults get boosters on a schedule that depends on the vaccine. Before you leave, we will tell you which vaccines are due next and when. Many owners find it easiest to line up boosters with the yearly exam.

Mild reactions and when to call

Most pets have no problem at all. Some feel a little off for a day or so. Common mild signs include:

  • Being sleepy or quieter than usual.
  • A small, tender bump where the shot was given.
  • A lower appetite for a meal or two.

These usually pass within a day or two. If a bump lasts more than a few weeks or keeps growing, call so we can check it.

Signs of a serious reaction

Call right away at (703) 680-4646 if you see facial swelling, hives, repeated vomiting, collapse, or trouble breathing after a vaccine. These reactions are rare but need prompt care. If we are closed, see our after-hours emergencies page.

To get your pet up to date, request an appointment. Bring any past vaccine records, even from another clinic in Prince William County or out of state.

Common questions

How often does my pet need vaccines?

It depends on the vaccine and your pet's age. Some boosters are given yearly and others less often. We will give you a schedule after the exam.

Is the rabies vaccine required for indoor cats?

Yes. Virginia law requires rabies vaccination for cats as well as dogs, even if they never go outside. Bats and other wildlife can get into homes.

When should my puppy or kitten start vaccines?

Most start around six to eight weeks of age and continue with a series of boosters every few weeks. Call (703) 680-4646 and we can help you set up that first visit.

Can my pet get several vaccines at once?

Often, yes. For small pets or those that have reacted before, the veterinarian may suggest spreading them across visits.

My pet reacted to a vaccine before. What should I do?

Tell us before the appointment. We will note it in the record and may change which vaccines are given, how they are spaced, or what we do beforehand.

What if I do not have my pet's vaccine records?

Ask your previous clinic to send them to us. If they cannot be found, the veterinarian will talk with you about the safest way to get your pet current.

Should I keep my pet quiet after shots?

A calm day is a good idea. Offer water and normal meals, and watch for any of the warning signs listed above.
